Literacy.
Literacy takes place daily throughout the school and incorporates the teaching of reading and writing and involves speaking and listening.
Our school aims to equip children with the skill to express themselves both orally and in writing as a means of communication in their everyday life. As each child embarks on their school life, their experience of language will vary considerably. Our aim is to lay firm foundations of literacy by building on and expanding their language experience and helping each child to reach their own level of competence in written and spoken English.
Reading is an essential skill for present day living and learning. In our school, reading is a continuous process in which learning takes place across all aspects of the curriculum. We use a variety of approaches to the teaching of reading in our school. Children in Reception and Keystage 1 develop their understanding of sounds and word building through the use of a synthetic phonics programme called 'Read Write Inc.' This develops into a focus on reading for meaning, equiping our pupils with skills for life. We extend interest and stimulate enthusiasm by introducing children to a wide range of books and a variety of texts. We encourage parents to play an active role in the development of childrens’ reading skills.
Children are introduced to joined handwriting in the reception class. We use a cursive script which allows all children across the school to develop a fluent, legible and individual style of their own.
