British Science Week – Whole School STEM challenge

This week, as part of British Science Week, the children took part in a whole‑school STEM challenge based on building the tallest possible tower. Working in their year groups, the children collaborated creatively and applied their scientific understanding—particularly around balance and centre of gravity—to design and construct towers that could stand independently.

Year 1&2 Winners: Tia, Theo and Oscar from Rowling

Year 3&4 Winners: Jad, Edward, Bea, Hugo, Felix and Matilda from Lewis

Year 5&6 Winners: Rose, Mabel and Hectar from Rowling.

We were especially impressed with the children’s determination, problem‑solving skills, and creativity across all age groups. Many children reflected on how they could improve their structures next time and KS2 had extra challenges such as balancing objects at the top or preparing their towers to withstand a “wind test.”

The winning teams from Years 1–6 will now move on to the STEM finals, which will take place next Tuesday. Schools from across Bristol will be coming together for this exciting event at the University of Bristol. The children will also have the opportunity to meet a guest scientist—an inspiring chance to help them think about future careers in STEM fields.

Well done to all the children for their enthusiasm and creativity this week. We are very proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing how they get on at the finals on Tuesday.
