PSHE Vision Statement
‘No one is born a good citizen or a good democrat or a good leader: it takes time and education.’ (Kofi Annan)
At St. Johns we value our PSHE curriculum as a set of fundamental skills that promotes our HUMANS framework, and enables our children to become thoughtful, respectful and responsible members of society. Our PSHE Curriculum enables children to use key learning to think critically and reflect on their own morals, emotions and responsibilities; providing them with the skills and knowledge to prepare them for adult life.
Our ethos is to ensure we provide a high-quality PSHE curriculum that will teach pupils to express their feelings, be nurturing and think critically about the world around them.
Social and emotional education, we believe, is key to children’s development. It allows them to really understand themselves, their happiness and how they relate to and fit into the world around them. Our curriculum provides the skills children need to interact with others, both within the school environment and outside. At St John’s we promote PSHE within our explicit teaching and through wider opportunities as part of our school ethos.
SEND
To support learners with additional needs, our ordinarily available provision is underpinned by inclusive approaches and strategies captured on our Quality First Inclusive Teaching document – although this is by no means an exhaustive list. Some children will need more bespoke provision which is then planned on an individual or small group basis.
How is PSHE inclusive?
Most outcomes are discussion based and therefore accessible for a range of learners; appropriate visual cues are used to support understanding; SEMH needs are considered through careful planning and adult support for specific individuals when needed; children are reminded of who their safe adults are if they have worries; before each PSHE lesson children are reminded about the ‘voice box’.
