Moving On Up – Transition to WR
Earlier this year, Mr. Matt Poole, one of our staff governors gathered feedback from staff, pupils and families on their thoughts around transition from Year 2 to Year 3. This was overwhelmingly positive about what we already do and how well children had settled into WR so quickly. There were also some really good, feasible suggestions that we will be adopting from this year onwards:
- We will provide a parent/carer meeting in term 6 for all current year 2 families about the move up to WR, this will be led by the current and new Year Group Leader who will cover all the important information and will also include a tour of the building.
- Every Year 3 child coming up will be allocated a Year 4 buddy who will meet them off the playground on day 1 and will be a point of contact to look after them.
- Year 3 will have a separate staggered playtime for the first 2 weeks so they can explore and get used to the playground.
- After 2 weeks, Year 3&4 teachers will email all families to check their child has settled well, answer any queries that have arisen etc. so parents/carers feel able to mention ‘the small things’ rather than wait for the first formal consultation.
- The Year 3&4 team will then continue to communicate each fortnight with an overview of the children’s learning and enrichment opportunities.
My thanks to Mr. Poole and all those who contributed their thoughts. We hope that these additional steps will further enhance the smooth transition to WR for those moving up from Year 2.
