The Great St John’s Shave Off

St John’s Team Movember

This term, eight brave staff members at St John’s Primary took on the Movember challenge, growing moustaches throughout November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health.

Together, the team raised an incredible £3,442 in support of physical and mental health charities. (Please note: our Movember page currently shows £3,392, but an additional £50 has already been received offline.)

The inspiration behind this year’s effort was Deputy Headteacher Mr Tony Weir, who is currently recovering from testicular cancer.

Tony’s openness about his diagnosis prompted a strong response from colleagues, pupils and their families. To show their support, staff, including Mr Weir and Headteacher Mr Hoye, committed to growing a ‘Mo’ for the full month.

The effort captured the spirit of the school community, with generous donations coming in from friends, families and pupils. While there were plenty of laughs (and a few questionable moustaches), the campaign carried a serious and important message: men’s health matters, and starting conversations can make a difference.

The month wrapped up in style with The Great St John’s Shave Off on Monday 1st December, a public shave in the playground that marked the end of the challenge and the return of a few familiar faces!

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who took part, and especially thankful to the school community for their support. Most of all, we’re delighted to share that Mr Weir is recovering well.
